Alor Cultural Expo 2006

We were bussed to the Sports Center where we were escorted to front row chairs as Guests of Honor at Alor Cultural Expo Opening Ceremonies.

 

There were snacks, gifts and handouts on each chair. We noticed that we were seated in front of the government officials! The Mayor and several other community dignitaries gave welcoming speeches and then a choir performed for us.

The grassy field began to fill as  a Cultural Parade with hundreds of representatives from the 9 Alorese Sub-Districts streamed into the stadium, each wearing the traditional costume of their area. There were thousands participating and the arena was soon chokers with colourful attire stretching for blocks and blocks.

Pictured right is a collage of some of the groups represented in the 2006 Alor Cultural Festival.

Thousands of local people and others from neighboring villages and islands watched the proceedings from bleachers and from the streets surrounding the Sports Stadium. It was definitely a huge occasion for these people who had come great distances from their homes.
When the parade was winding down and the band was getting ready to play we left the stadium and headed to the local hotel for cold beer. There we met several other cruisers and visited the night away.
