BALEARIC ISLANDS

We focused our Mediterranean Spanish explorations in the Balearic Islands, an archipelago in the western Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Spain, consisting of the islands of Mallorca, Minorca, Ibiza, and Formentera.

Although the Balearics are remote from the mainland they are still very much a crowded tourist destination in the summer months.

As we needed to transit the Straight to Gibraltar by September, we sailed directly to La Linea, Spain, adjacent to Gibraltar. Once into the Atlantic Ocean, we took a right turn to Cadiz where we made a land trip to Seville.

Our plans to visit the Portuguese islands of Madeira's were squelched by the weather, so we changed our heading toward the Canary Islands, a Spanish colony, with a stopover in Morocco.

CANARY ISLANDS

The Canary Islands, which are part of Spain, are west of Morocco. Seven islands make up the archipelago but we only visited 3 of the islands, Graciosa, the small island above Lanzarote, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria.

The islands are volcanic in nature with each island having its unique characteristics in landscape and personality.
